Jul. 07, 1963 - Royal Navy;s New aircraft carrier. : An admiralty artist's impression of a design study for the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier, displacement approximately 50, 000 tons. Approval to build this was announced yesterday by the Minister of Defence in the House of Commons. The ship will incorporate all the latest improvements to facilitate the operation of the future generations of aircraft which will have either vertical-landing or very slow-landing capability. These will enable the aircraft to be operated from carriers even by pilots who have not had flight deck train and practice. Improvements shown in the drawing include the siting of the Island inboard, and of the port catapult on the angled deck. Both these modifications will improve the parking and deck movement of an increased number of aircraft
