Mar. 03, 1966 - Press visit to the Royal Navy's New Assault ship.: There was a Press visit today to H.M.S. Fearless, the Royal Navy's new assault ship, which is currently continuing her trials and work-up in the Solent area during which landing craft and helicopter operations were demonstrated. Tank landing craft that swim in and out; a flight deck large enough to take four helicopters, and a floating assault force headquarters. This is all part of H.M.S. Fearless, the first Assault Landing ship of the Royal Navy, which can carry about 400 troops with a significant number of tanks, vehicles and heavy equipment. This number can be increased to about 700 troops for short periods. She can put men and this equipment ashore by landing craft operating from her dock, or smaller LCVP's from davits, or alternatively by helicopters from her flight deck. For her own defence, H.M.S. Fearless has four Seacat surface-to-air guided missile mountings. Photo shows a troop carrying helicopters, can be seen leaving the flight deck of H.M.S.
