Feb. 02, 1967 - Dhow to sail from Mombasa to New York: operation dhow is the name of a project to sail an African dhow from Mombasa to New York from may to august, 1967. the three partners in the ventures are Abu Bomo, born Faze Island, Lamu District, Kenya, 1940, A, J. (Tony) Hughes, born Hemel Hempstead, England, 1933. and Luke Lane born Tulsa, Oklahoma U.S.A. 1927. and they will sail with a crew of Bajuni sailors from Lamu district. It will be the first time a dhow has sailed in the Mediterranean are of course. in the Atlantic. The journey was conceived as an adventure by the participants during a visit to alamu last year. at sunset they sat together on the balcony of Abu Somo's residence. Watching a dhew sailing off the coast, Lane directed a whimsical question at Abu Somo, How would you like to sail from here to New York in one of the those?, The chance idea of an evening's conversation grew into a carefully planned project. The motivation is the desire to do something both challenging and unusual, but not foolhardy or cranky. it is expected that the voyage will drew attention to Kenya and its people in a positive light. while the purpose is not commercial, it will give an opportunity for sponsors to make use of the voyage form their own public relation. The vessel is named the Futahalba (Arabic for open the dop'). no engine will be used - only sail power a deck will be added to provide run-off for the heavier seas which will be met, but there will be no basics structural alterations. It was built at Lamu in the traditional manner in 1965 and has since been sailing along the East African coast to the Middle East. The journey will take 122 days, of which 24 will be in port of 4.16 knots. ports of wall will be Aden, Port Said Benghazi, Tunis, Algiers, Gibraltar, Azores Bermuda and new york. photo shows Luke lane, tony Hughes and abu somo, aboard the Futahalbab'.
