Boats - Sailing - Ships

Jun. 06, 1967 - Germany's Latest Aircraft-Wing Boat Built For Spanish Shipping Line: Called Black Pirate this new type of aircraft-wing boat will shortly be carrying tourists between the Spanish mainland and the island of Majorea. The boat, which has been constructed for a Spanish shipping firm, was built in Germany, and so far is the most modern one of its kind. This combination between ship and airplane is able to compete with both kinds economically. The boat has a length of 75-feet, 83 gross registered tons and carries a crew of four. When the wings are lowered into the water it can reach a speed of 30 m.p.h. The propellers are driven by two diesel engines from a gas turbine. Photo shows A rear view of the boat showing one of the propeller driven wings in the raised position during recent trials in Hamburg, Germany, where she was built
