Sep. 09, 1967 - A Giant Hovercraft Nears Completion: Four 165-ton SR.N4 hovercraft, a fast passenger/car ferry designed for operations on open-sea ferry routes, are in various stages of production at British Hovercraft Corporation's factory at Cowes. One can be varied to suit and operator's requirements. Typical layouts include all passenger version carrying 500 people seated over 700/800 commuter passengers on short routes and a passenger/car version 256 people seated and 30 cars. In addition, SR. N4 can be used to carry freight. Large doors in the bow and stern greatly facilitate loading and unloading. Fitted with 7ft. skirts, SRN4 will be capable of operating in 10ft. seas normally the maximum sea state envisaged in open water routes such as the English Channel. In calm weather it can carry a disposableload of 63.5 tons at a maximum cruising speed of 70 knots over distances of up to 175 n. miles on 10 tons of fuel.
