Oct. 10, 1967 - Britain's 52 million first Polaris Submarine Resolution Joins the Royal Navy: H.M.S. Resolution, Britain's first Polaris submarine went into service with the Royal Navy today. Built at a cost of 52 million, it carries 16 Polaris missiles, and has six 21-inch torpedo tubes. It has two captains and two crews, and is the first ship in the Navy to have double manning. Each crew will spend two months at sea on patrol, mostly underwater. Photo shows Commander K.D. Freyer, one of the submarine's two captains, watches two members of the crew operating the complex system of hundreds of buttons and dials on the ship's main control panel.
