Mar. 03, 1965 - Launching of The Expedition Ship Fuji'. The Antarctica Expedition ship Fuji was launched recently in a ceremony attended by Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko at the Yokohoma City Shipyard. The Princess cut the launching rope with a small axe to launch the 7, 760 ton observation vessel - in a ceremony watched by 10, 000 spectators. The vessel has been described as being the Cream of Japan's Shipbuilding Technology and being capable of breaking through 2.5 metre thick ice. She will start on her maiden voyage to the Antarctic in November this year - with a team of 182 crew and experts aboard
