1968 - Japan's First Bathyscape Named: Japan's first bathyscape, now nearing completion at Kobe dockyard was named Shinkai (Deep Sea) during a ceremony last week. The name Deep Sea was chosen after a public contest, and submitted by Toshihiko Onodera, a 12-year-old schoolboy. The building of the bathyscape was undertaken jointly by the Japanese Science and Technology Agency, and the Maritime Safety Agency to Survey the continental shelf around Japan. Measuring 15.4 metres in length, 5.5 metres in width, and 5 mtres in depth, the bathyscape is equipped with 11-kilowatt marine engines giving it an underwater speed of 3.5 knots.
