1967 - Funnel Research For Q4: Six months of research and testing went into the perfection of the unique funner and mast of the new Cunard Q4 liner now being built at Clydebank. Details of the 58, 000 ton ship are announced simultaneously in London and New York today. The liner will spend a large proportion of her time cruising and the designers faced problems to ensure that her sweeping, terraced decks are kept free from smoke and fumes. Twenty different funnel designs were tested in the wind tunnel at the National Physical Laboratory at Toddington, Middleser before one was chosen. The ship is the first big liner to have all her restaurants and kitchens on the upper decks and another problem for Mr. Dan Wallace, Cunard's Naval Architect, and his colleagues was to dispose of fumes and smells from the kitchens. This was achieved by using the holllow mast of the ship as an exhaust shaft.
