1967 - Third British Nuclear Fleet Submarine Warspite Commissioned: Britain's third nuclear Fleet submarine H.M.S. Warspite, was commissioned for service with the Royal Navy at the Barrow-in-Furness Yard of Messrs. Vickers Limited (Shipbuilding Group), yesterday. The guest of honour at the ceremony was Mrs. Wilson wife of the Prime Minister. Mrs. Wilson named the submarine at the launch is September 1965. The Warspite, which is of all-British construction, has a lenghth of 285-feet, and a beam of 33 feet. She is equipped with the latest underwater dettion aids and weapon, is fitted with Inertial Navigation System, and her propulsion machinery consists of a pressurised water reactor driving a single-shaft through steam turbines. The Captain, Commander Robert Squires, R.N. is an experienced nuclear submariner.
