1970 - Hovercraft Goes Aground on Sands for School Trip. The treacherous Goodwin Sands, off the Kent coat, provided a novel outing yesterday for 200 pupils from Crawley Junior School, Sussex. They chartered a hovercraft from Dover for the 12 mils trip, which took 15 minutes, and went aground for a 20 minutes frolic in the sands and tidal pools.
