Feb. 02, 1970 - Gretel II - Australia's yacht to challenge for the America's cup - launched: Australia's third 12 metre yacht to challenge for the America's cup, Gretel Ii, was launched at Berry's Bay recently. The new Gretel will be paired against France in a sail off at Newport, Rhode Is, for the right to challenge America next September for the America's Cup. Australia's previous challengers, Gretel and Dame Pattie, were defeated by America in the last two attempts. Gretel II was built in great secrecy b Mr. Bill Barnett for Sir Frank Packer. Photo shows ship shooted their sirens as the floating crane, Falcon, carried Gretal Ii in a cradle out into the bay and lowered her into the water
