Aug. 08, 1973 - Golf on the Ark Royal: Officers in Ark Royl, the Navy's Largest aircraft carrier now in Devonport for a six-months refit, refused to admit defeat when ratings wanting to learn to play golf asked them to help. Nets were rigged to allow driving practise and back in port the flight-deck became a practice green'. The craze for golf swept the lower deck after programmes on the British Open were televised during the carrier's recent Commission. Then, when the crew went ashore in United States, they found golf clubs at the American PX- the equivalent of the NAAPI - were far below British prices. When news of the Sailors enthusiasm spread around Fort Lauderdale, the crew found they were welcome guests at almost 40 Local golf links. Now the Ark Royal holds the Navy's Inter- Establishment Championship. Picture Shows: Lieut. Tony Hodgson instructing Able Seaman Eric Picked on the Green of the Ark Royal at Devonport where Britain's biggest carrier has won the Royal Navy's Inter-Establishment golf Championship
