Nov. 11, 1972 - Old Sailing barge is children's adventure school. Sai Sailing from her mooring at Tower Pier at the weekend with a dozen schoolchildren aboard, was the Thalatta - a 150-ton sailing barge once used to carry malt from Ireland. Now the Thalatta has been turned into an adventure training ship for your people by the East Coast Sail Trust, which rescued the barge from destruction. The 90ft. long Thalatta was built at Harwich in 1906 of English oak and pitchpine decks. During the 1914 - 18 war she was used by the Navy as a fleet supply vessel and also did valuable work in the 1939-45 war. The Thalatta ended trading in 1966 and was later acquired by the Trust in conjunction with the London borough of Redbridge for use as a school ship. Since then she has carried more miles in and around the Thames. Photo shows the former Thames sailing barge Thalatte, passing Silvertown on her way to Maldon at the weekend
