Sep. 21, 1976 - Two sailors were killed and ten were missing last night after the Royal Naval Reserve minesweeper Fittleton, 360 tons, collided off northern Holland with the Royal Navy frigate, Mermaid, 2, 300 tons. All the casualties were from the Fittleton, which capsized and sank. Thirty two survivors from the Fittleton, three of them injured, were picked up by the Mermaid, which was virtually undamaged. Both ships were taking part in the massive NATO exercise Teamwork, which involves 80, 000 personnel, 275 ships and 900 aircraft from nine countries. Rescue ships were searching the collision area for survivors last night.
