Nov. 11, 1978 - Sweden's Challenger for the America's cup 1980: Everything is now apparently clear for at least one Swedish Challenger to the America's cup in 1980. Ever since the New York Yacht Club in the 1850's carried home the cup from England, it has been jealously guarded against challengers. In 1977, the Royal Gothenburg Sailing society along with French and Australian sailing societies issued challenges, to no avail. The Cup stayed in New York. For next year, the Sverige's skipper and designer Pelle Patterson will tkae a new swing at the Americans. This time probably in company with another Swedish boat, from Stockholm boat designer Peter Horlin has designed a new hull this is currently aqudynamically tested at the Royal Swedish sailing society plane to crown its 150th anniversary with a challenge to the Americans for the 1980 sailing off Newport Rhode Island.
