Mar. 03, 1958 - Mixed-Power Aircraft Climbs On Rocket Engine: The Saunders-Roe S-R.53 is a mixed-power interceptor aircraft employing both rocket engine and jet-turbine power units. It is said to be capable of altitudes and speeds well in excess of existing height and speed records. Photo shows The S-R.53 climbing under its rocket power. On the tips of its wings are two Firestreak infra-red guided weapons, which, like both its engines, are products of the de Havilland Aircraft Company
