May 05, 1956 - First close up of the fairy fireflash - Britain's Successful air-to-air guided weapon.: This is one of the first close-ups of the Fairey Fireflash air-to air guided weapon - which has successfully destroyed a radio-controlled target aircraft. The weapon was forced from a Gloster Meteor N.F. 11 night fighter - and the target aircraft was a Fairey Firefly. The Fireflash seeks and then strikes the target. It is propelled at supersonic seeds by so bif fuel rockets - and the war head is designed to explode when the weapon id within lethal range. The fireflash is now in Production fro the Royal Air Force and is under consideration by the Commonwealth and N.A.T.O. air forces
