May 05, 1956 - First close up of the Fairey Fireflash - Britain's successful air to air guided weapon: This is one of the first close ups of the Fairey fireflash air to air guided weapon - which has successfully destroyed a radio controlled target aircraft. The weapon was fired from a Gloster Meteor N.F. 11 night fighter - and the target aircraft was a Fairey Firefly. The Fireflash seeks and then strikes the target. It is propelled at Supersonic speeds by solid fuel rockets and the war head is designed to explode when the weapon is within lethal range
