Feb. 26 Tank Made Of Aluminum. Metalic Revolution Revealed In U.S. Battle Equipment: United States armed forces are now converting hundreds of military items to aluminum to achieve lightweight mobility and reduced maintenance. With increased use of helicopter cavalry it is becoming increasingly necessary to produce equipment that can be readily transported. A defence list of conversions revealed by Reynolds Metals - America's biggest producers of aluminum - includes self-propelled guns, trucks, personnel carriers, airborne tractors, cranes, assault ferries, amphibious vehicles, bridges, etc. The use of aluminum armour plate in certain vehicles is said to give the same protection against shell fire as steel with one third less weight. Photo shows Being airlifted by helicopter, this lightweight Scorpion M.56 self-propelled anti-tank vehicle is made of aluminum. Carrying a 90 milli-meter gun it has a crew of four and is used for forward battle areas. It is seen at Fort Benning, Georgia
