Jan. 21, 1962 - The American battle cruiser, Long Beach, the first nuclear powered vessel, arrived at the harbor here yesterday afternoon for a a week-long stop. There are 77 officers among the 979 on board. The vessel is powered by two nuclear reactors and two propellers. It is the first surface vessel in which the principle battery is a battery for guided missiles. It is equipped with the missiles Talos and Terrier, both of which are anti-submarine missiles. The captain, Eugene P. Wilkinson, who commands the Long Beach was the first mate on the nuclear powered submarine, Nautilus
