Jun. 06, 1965 - M.E.X.E. Opens its gates: The Military Engineering Experimental Establishment at Christchurch, opens its gates to outsiders every four years, and on these occasions invited visitors may see those new projects which have emerged from behind the curtain of secrecy in the 9nterim, and some others that are still classified but which do not outwardly reveal their secrets. Today was Press Day at the Establishment. Photo shows a tank crossing a Medium Girder Bridge - a hand-built bridge intended as a replacement for obsolescent equipment such as the Bailey Bridge and as an alternative to other forms of assault bridge when building can be done out of contact with the enemy. It is of light alloy construction, easier to handle and quicker to build than the older bridges which it replaces, and requires less transport
