Oct. 10, 1965 - Unexploded bomb found in Walthamstow: It is an affectionate pat that Edwin Ellis gives the thing. The sort of pat you reserve for a whopper that didn't get away; or a favorite child. Or an unexploded 2, 000 lb bomb, which was good enough not to endanger his well being after he drove a 35 ton excavator over it three times yesterday. Mr. Ellis, who works on the site of an old reservoir at Walthamstow, London, came across the bomb when his excavator could not budge it. He thought it was a boulder and got down to investigate. Then, as he said last night; I took a deep breath and beat it. Fast. Mr. Ellis, from Colne Engaine, near Colchester, reported the little matter in the mud and all 250 men on the site were sent home. Then an Army bomb disposal unit were given a police escort to get to the site from Horsham in Sussex. After removing the fuse, disposal expert Captain Brian Dace said: A 2, 000 lb. unexploded bomb is quite rare these days. We will take it back to Horsham and explode it where it can do no harm.
