Bombs - Guns - Weapons

1967 - Metropolitan Police Defensive Weapons Course: A number of Metropolitan Police Officers are taking part in Defensive Weapon Couses, which began earlier this month, including both uniformed and C.I.D. officers in each division. Eventually only officers who have qualified at one of these courses will be authorized to use firearms. Classes are held at indoor ranges and instruction in fieldcraft will be given at a site in Essex. It is emphasized that there is no change in policy regarding the arming of police officers nor is there an increase in the number of weapons used by the Force. The centrally organized courses should result eventually in an increasing number of officers authorized to use firearms and a better overall standard. A Press visit to the indoor range at City Road Police Station to see police officers being trained in the use of small firearms was held today. Photo shows Constable Kenneth Bullen, under the instruction of Staff Constable Arthur Batten, using a 3.8 Webley, practicing sighted firing from cover. The standard weapon used is the 3.8. Webley
