Jun. 06, 1976 - Army Unveils Its Lighweight Rifle: A New 4.85 mm British lightweight rifle, weighting only 9lb loz, which is nearly 3 1/2 lb lighter than the standard self-loading rifle, (left) in use for 18 years, being demonstrated at the school of Infantry, Warminster, Wilts. Together with a new machine-gun of the same Calibre, the weapon will be Britain's entry in next year's Nato Trials aimed at agreement in the use of a common type of small arms for use by Allied infantry by 1980. The two weapons, developed by a team at the Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield, have 80 per cent common components and the ammunition is only half as heavy as the old-relieving the infantryman's load
