Nov. 11, 1979 - Government order new British torpedo stingray': The Government has placed a £200 million contract fro the development and initial production of the Marconi Stingray anti-submarine torpedo. This lightweight torpedo, which is to come into service in a few years time, will be used by Navy helicopters and surface ships as well as Raf Nimrod patrol aircraft. Some of the technical details of Stingray has been made public. It incorporates a computer to inabale it to follow the sound made by the wake of a submarine, and it is believed to have a warhead weighing about 100 lbs and is powered by a saltwater battery.
