Boxing

Aug. 08, 1973 - Stevenson Beats Czech Star Sommer: Santiago De Cuba Olympic heavyweight Champion Teofilo Stevenson knocked out Petr Sommer, three times champion of Czechoslovakia, in the Giraldo Cordova Cardin International Boxing Tournament here. Sommer, the only boxer to beat Stevenson twice in 1971, was felled in the first round by a fierce right from the Cuban. The tournament is being held as part of the festivities to mark the 20th anniversary of the attack on the Moncada barracks, which marked the beginning of the armed insurrection against the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship.
