Boy in rescue exercise, Gordonstoun School, Scotland

1954 - Scotland, United Kingdom - With Eton, Gordonstoun is still a hot favourite because the Duke of Edinburgh was there and is known to favour its in some ways unorthodox methods conceived and practised by the famous Dr Hahn in Germany at Salem and later when he moved from Nazi Germany to Scotland and continued them at Gordonstoun. Since then the school has gone from strength to strength and more people are realising the value of its method of encouraging self-reliance, a tough physical education allied to all that is best academically and with a good balance of practical subjects. For the adventurous boy the school is a heaven on earth with its own Mountain Rescue Unit, Fire Service Unit, canoeing, pipe band, electronics laboratory, and its sometimes criticised methods of self-discipline, punishments of silence, and habits of cold water showers for all have seldom carried much weight with those who have been there. These are the latest pictures, taken at the close of this term, and show something of what Prince Charles may experience in the coming years. How Gordonstoun Helps the Local Community : The Hahn-Gordonstoun idea is that a school should not isolate itself but serve the community in which it exists. The young always respond to challenge and rescue work is such an inspiration. Therefore, in addition to the usual CCF, the school runs an efficient Coastguard Unit integrated with the HM Coastguard of the area; a Fire Service, a Unit of the National Fire Brigade; a Mountain Rescue Unit and a Surf-Lifesaving Unit, ready at any time.
