British hovercraft tested in New York Harbour, USA

Dec. 26 British Hovercraft Tested in New York Harbor - As Possible Addition to Mass Transit Facilities - New York, Oct. 1- With Large Cities Continually Seeking solutions to their mass transit problems, New York City was looking to its rivers week by testing a hovercraft. This Unusual form of transportation -- a vessel that rides on a cushion of air above the water -- made a demonstration run with Mayor John V. Lindsay, William J. Ronan, Chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and other transportation officials aboard. Undergoing the test was a BH-7 Military version of the air-cushioned vessel. 78 feet long, manufactured by the British Hovercraft Corporation and powered by a Rolls Royce Marine Proteus engine. Hovercraft four times the size of the demonstration model presently cross the English Channel at 70 mile-an-hour speeds with a capacity of 250 passengers and 30 vehicles, and they could be used as a fast form of water transportation to and from waterfront locations in the five boroughs
