Feb. 28 100. BIRTHDAY OF BRUNO WALTER ON 15 September 1976. One hundred years ago, exactly on 15.9.1876, the famous American conductor of German origin, Bruno Walter was born (his full name: BRUNO WALTER SCHLESINGER). The birthplace of Bruno Walter is Berlin. His career started at Cologne in 1894, where he conducted the Waffenschmied'. He became orchestra-leader at the opera at Hamburg and he also worked at Breslau, Pressburg (Bratislava) and Riga. From 1913 to 1922 he was general music-director at Munich, from 1925 to 1929 he directed the town-opera at Berlin, 1933 he became conductor at the Gewandhausorchester in Leipzig and from 1934 to 1936 he directed the State opera in Vienna. In 1938 he left Austria and first went to France, but then after a short time he entered the UNITED STATES. In 1946 he became an American citizen. Bruno Walter who also wrote symphonies and piano works, was president of the Gustav-Mahler-Society and holder of the gold Mozart-Medal, The famous conductor - our picture shows him with his wife-died on 17.2.1962 at Beverly Hills, California
