Budd Schulberg, novelist, testifies at HUAC, USA
May 05, 1951 - Novelist Budd Schulberg (author of The Disenchanted and What Makes Sammy Run') tells the House UN-American Activities Committee, where he testified today, about his connection with the Communist party from 1937 to 1940. Schulberg stated that he joined a study group in 1937 that was later incorporated into the Communist Party as a youth group. Reasons for joining, he said, were the party's opposition to Hitler and Mussolini. He left the party in 1940, he stated, because of the attempts to dominate his writing
