Feb. 02, 1969 - Folklore Festival Of Mummers In Bulgaria. The Third Folklore Festival of Mummers was held in the town of Pernik, Bulgaria. The mummer games emerged in the remote primitiveness of the Old Bulgarians. They were intended symbolically to inspire fear and terror in the evil forces threatening the farmer and his labour throughout the year, to chase away diseases, beasts of prey, hail - storms, droughts and crop failures so that there may be abundant harvests, good health, happiness and progress in everything. Photo shows scene during the colorful Folklore Festival of Mummers
