Burial of Baader-Meinhof prisoners, Stuttgart, Germany

Apr. 18 Burial Of The Baader-Meinhof Prisoners: In the Dornhalden churchyard in Stuttgart (FRG) on October 27th, 1977 took place the burial of Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan-Carl Raspe, who committed suicide in the prison of Stuttgart-Stammheim on October 18th. After an unceremonious funeral service the three coffins were brought to the graves, escorted by the dependants of the dead and around 800 mainly young people, who were largely masked. There was a banner with the words: Gudrun, Andreas + Jan in Stammheim tormented and murdered, In these coffins, which here are let down, the resistance will not be buried or the typical clenched fists as a political gesture. Gudrun Baader was buried in a single grave, while Andreas Baader and Jan-Carl Raspe were buried together. The funeral was watched by about 1000 policemen, who controlled later many of the burial attendees. It resulted in demonstrations and arrests. Photo shows Parson Helmut Ensslin, the father of Gudrun Ensslin, by the three coffins
