Dec. 16 Supersonic Designer: Robert H.Widmer, vice president-research and engineering at General Dynamics/Fort Worth, has been awarded the Spirit of St. Louis Medal for 1962 by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The award, for meritorious service in the advancement of aeronautics, is in recognition of Widmer's outstanding contributions to the development of the B-58 supersonic bomber seen behind him. The only Air Force bomber that operates at more than twice the speed of sound, the B-58 has set fourteen world records for speed, payload and altitude
