Aug. 08, 1968 - Subscriber Dialing to Norway Opened: Cheaper telephone calls to Norway began today where Sir John Wall, Deputy Chairman of the Post Office, inaugurated International Subscriber Dialing ( ISD ) between the two countries. Made possible by the new Scarborough Kristiansand cable, the new service is now available to telephone users in six big cities (Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glagow, London, Liverpool, Manchester) who already use ISD to Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Wet Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Dialing the first call, Sir John pointed out that the UK-Norway telephone service was far cheaper that it had been 40 years ago. In 1927 a three minute call to Norway had cost 18s6d; allowing for the equivalent of &3-&4 today. The cost of a similar call today was 16s and ISD, at 2d for two seconds, reduced this to 15s while a short call could he made for only a few pence, The charge for an operator-controlled call has been reduced to 15s for three minutes.
