Dec. 12, 1979 - ROLLS-ROYCE AND JAPAN TO DESIGN NEW AIRLINE ENGINE. An agrement for the joint design of a new commercial aero engine by Rolls Royce and three Japanese companies was signed in London today. The design is for an engine of about 19, 000lb thrust to enter service in 1986. It is entended for airliners of up to 150 seats and is based on the RB 432 project. The Japanese companies working with Rolls Royce are Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The agreement was signed in Tokyo yesterday, and the London signing took place at the Rolls Royce headquarters in Buckingham Gate.
