Feb. 02, 1960 - The Marathon Marchers On The Way. The Mass Start: Seven hundred competitors set out yesterday from John O'Groats - on the Butlin Marathon walk to Land's End. Five hours after the start -150 people had dropped out - and soon 21 of them were in hospital at work - being treated for blisters and exposure.. Holiday Camp King Billy Butlin is putting up prizes valued at more than5, 000 - and with No. 13 up - he set off to cover the first 50 miles himself.
