Butlin Marathon walk from John O'Groats to Land's End
Feb. 02, 1960 - The Marathon Marchers On The Way. The Mass Start. Seven hundred competitors set out from John O'Groats - on the Butlin Marathon walk to Land's End. Five Hours after the start - 150 people dropped out- and soon 21 of them were in hospital at Wick - being treated for blisters and exposure. Holiday Camp King Billy Butlin is putting up prizes valued at more than £5, 000 - and with No. 13 up - he set off to cover the first 50 miles himself.
