C Rajagopalachari, leader of the Swatantra Party, India

Feb. 02, 1967 - Election shocks for Mrs Gandhi: Mrs Gandhi's ruling Congress Party has suffered a series of shock defeats from both the left and right in the early returns today from the week long Indian Elections. Between the Juan Sangh and the right-wing Swatantra Party, the Congress Party was having a difficult time in the Western desert State of Rajasthan. Congress has won 25 of 50 State Assembly seats and a continuation of the trend would open the way for a coalition state government. The Swatantra party whose leader is Mr. C. Rajogopalachari, offered one major reversal however, with the defeat of Maharani Gayari of Jaipur in her fight for a state assembly seat. Photo shows Mr. C. Rajagopalachari the Leader of the Swatantra Party which is doing well in the Indian Elections against Mrs Gandhi
