Feb. 02, 1961 - Runaway train rams houses eight people had miraculous escapes.: Eight people had miraculous escaped from death when a 120-ton diesel train crashed through station buffers and a stone wall to plough across a road and through a row of terraced houses at 35-40 mph. near Oldham, Lanos, yesterday. Driver Harry Pearse sounded his horn for a quarter of a mile as the train hurtled out of control down a gradient into Royton Station. Then, 30 yards from the buffers, he flung himself on to the station platform. Five people including three women who had been asleep in the houses were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
