1954 - The battle of Dien Bien Phu as seen from the air: Tanks and infantry attacking from the French fortress of Dien Bien Phu recently wiped out a Viet Minh rebel battalion which set up guns in two villages a mile away to the west. The French report that a thousand rebel dead were counted. They claim that French losses were slight fewer than 30 being killed. The attack began on Sunday morning with a direct approach march across the Dien Bien Phu plain from the central French defensive position airfield, west of the airfield.
