Canadian Pacific Hy-Rail Unit at West Drayton, UK
Feb. 26 Demonstration of CP Rail's Hy-Rail Unit. One of the most unusual cars ever to arrive in Britain was demonstrated at West Drayton Railway Station. British Rail kindly agreed to allow Canadian Pacific Railway - CP Rail - to display a Hy-Rail Unit, one of the most unusual items of the company's rolling stock, while it was on a brief visit to Britain. The car, to use its official designation - Hy-Rail Unit, is in fact a typical North American estate car with one big difference - it's designed to run on railway lines as well as roads. It can be adapted from normal road use to become a locomotive in little over three minutes - and that includes adding the obligatory locomotive bell, essential by law in North America.
