Canadian Red Cross Memorial Hospital, Taplow, Bucks

Nov. 11, 1959 - Maths with your Medicine: The School in the hospital: So that the education of a child affected by rheumatic fever, poliomyelitis, etc. will not suffer, the Canadian Red Cross Memorial Hospital at Taplow, Buckinghamshire, whose research unit is famous for its work in juvenile rheumatism, runs a school for its patients, a large number of whom receive long-term treatment. Together with medical attention, nursing and physiotherapy teachers do their best to see that their patient-pupils return to normal school without additional educational handicaps due to their absence. Some youngsters have, by necessity, had practically all their education in hospital yet on discharge have qualified for entrance to secondary grammar school. Children with affected hearts study in bed while those suffering from the crippling effects of Still's disease, spend much time in the Physiotherapy Department which includes a heated swimming pool for hydro Arithmetic, Biology (microscopes are provided), shorthand, typing and even Braille are taught. There is an aviary and a library. At the moment, a patient is studying Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics for the GCE A level. Though crippling diseases among children are becoming less and less frequent these days, there is no doubt that the Hospital School is and will continue to provide an invaluable service, free and of its own goodwill. Photo shows Hydro-Therapy: In the swimming pool some of the youngsters do exercises as part of their Still's disease treatment
