The U-boat man, Commander Wilhelm Schulz, ignored Hitler's orders to shoot survivors. He saved the life of Captain Howard Baker and others by rescuing them, treating their wounds, repairing their lifeboat, and sending them off with food and water and a course to safety. For years after the war the English captain tried to trace the German, whose act of mercy was mentioned at the Nuremberg trials as an example of German humanity. Finally he found his address in Hamburg, where he works as a salesman. And yesterday, Commander Schulz and his wife came as holiday guests to Captain Baker's pub at Poole, Dorset, where the two men greeted each other like long-lost brothers
