Oct. 10, 1956 - Italian beats record in his strange looking car The world record for the 500 cc class over one kilometre from a standing start previously held by the German driver, Von Opel, was broken on Tuesday at Castelfusano, near Rome, by Pietro Taruffi, the Italian driver in a double-torpedo car which he designed himself.
