Oct. 10, 1959 - Motorists can now call a Garage for help by telephone from their car: A motorist who has a breakdown miles from nowhere can now call a garage for help without getting out of his car. Britain's first car telephone service was opened yesterday by Mr. Reginald Hevins, the Postmaster-General. From a car at Lymm, Cheshire, he phoned Lord Rootes, chairman of the Rootes Group and of the Dollar Export Council, in London. To have a telephone fitted into your car will cost about £200. It is really a two way radio. To make a call the driver asks the exchange to dial the number for him. And if your boss at the office rings you on the road, the exchange calls you on a loud speaker in your car. At present the service is being run only through Manchester.
