Car Parts - Engines - Tire - Transportation - Vehicles

Oct. 10, 1959 - Motorists can now call a Garage for help by telephone from their car: A motorist who has a breakdown miles from nowhere can now call a garage for help without getting out of his car. Britain's first car telephone service was opened yesterday by Mr. Reginald Hevins, the Postmaster-General. From a car at Lymm, Cheshire, he phoned Lord Rootes, chairman of the Rootes Group and of the Dollar Export Council, in London. To have a telephone fitted into your car will cost about £200. It is really a two way radio. To make a call the driver asks the exchange to dial the number for him. And if your boss at the office rings you on the road, the exchange calls you on a loud speaker in your car. At present the service is being run only through Manchester. Photo shows Mr. Revins the Postmaster General, makes the inaugural call on the new South Lancs Car Radiophone Service from a car at Lymm, Cheshire, to Lord Rootes in London
