Feb. 26 The Austin Maxi: The Maxi - British Leyland's new Austin 1500 saloon, is officially announced today. Costing979, its advanced specification makes it the most complete and versatile family car yet produced by a British manufacturer. It has five doors, including a tailgate, front wheel drive, overhead camshaft engine and a built-in economy device in the form of an overdrive fifth gear. The Maxi looks like a saloon, but it can be converted into an estate car by folding the rear seat forward. Alternatively, front and rear seat backs can be lowered to form a double-bed for camping.
