Mar. 22 Jet powered car leaves the ground at 600 M.P.H.: World's fastest car, Spirit of America-Sonic I, piloted by Craig Breedlove, nearly met disaster at Bonneville when his jet powered vehicle literally started to take-off from the famous Utah salt flats at a speed of 600 m.p.h. earlier this month. With only slight damage to the nose of his vehicle, Breedlove retired from the course. Now the speed-demon plans to make another attempt later this month. His car is said tohave a speed potential in the 800 m.p.h. range. Photo shows Craig Breedlove and his jet powered vehicle Spirit of America-Sonic I
