Mar. 02 Dial-a-bus, a New Experimental Service: The residents of Hampstead Garden Suburb are the proud recipients of London Transports, new innovation - The Dial-a-bus service. Dial-a-bus, is a kind of public Taxi service, and it is hoped that it will be the ideal solution to maintaining econimically viable services in areas with low or irregular need. It is also a possible solution to transport along roads unsuitable for large buses, because the dial-a-bus is a compact 16 seat Ford minibus. The idea is that a hopeful passenger remains in the comfort of his home. instead of risking pneumonia and aggravation at the bus stop, and simply dials his request for a bus on his telephone. The Controller will then inform the passenger when to expect the bus, which will follow a rout specially designed to collect each passenger from their home. The bus which will run approximately every 15 minutes, and will stop at several fixed stops for the casual passenger, will run from Golders Green underground to Lyttelton Road market place and back. The buss will also stop, when hailed, if is safe, so each journey will be quite unique, and infinitely variable. It will also be possible to place a regular order. Hampstead Carden Suburb was chosen because there was existing bus service as the roads were unsuitable, and there was an exceptionally high rate of telephone ownership (81%) The experiment will be continued for the 6 months test period. so far after a couple of months the results are encouraging.
