Mar. 03, 1960 - British Car Company Producing New Family Jet Car. The Rover T.3': The Rover Motor Company of Birmingham which pioneered the first gas turbine car ten years ago is now working on producing the family car of the future. The experts of the company aims at putting the jet car on the road at an economic price and at a minimum fuel consumption of 20 miles per gallon of paraffin. The prototype of the jet car, which has the code name T.3 has been tested on the Solihull, Warwickshire - track of the company. It has a glass fibre body and is operated with only two foot pedals - accelerator and brake. There is no clutch and only one gear. The car is claimed to be simple to drive - and there is no danger to pedestrians from exhaust heat. The T.3 does 14 miles to a gallon of paraffin at a cruising speed of 40 m.p.h. - and it is claimed that fuel consumption is even better at 60 m.p.g. Before going into mass production - the company wants to give the machine an average fuel consumption of 20 m.p.g. Because of the great heat generated by this type of engine many parts have to be hand forged, which naturally means greater cost and slower production speed. It will be necessary to produce at least 50 a week before the car is generally marketed. Photo shows View of the T.3 - jet car prototype - produced by the Rover Car Company.
